GTA 6 Preload: Date and How to Preload on PS5 and Xbox

The countdown is almost over: GTA 6 preloading starts on November 12, 2026, one week before the game launches on November 19. Preloading lets you download the whole game in advance, so you can play the moment it unlocks instead of waiting for a huge download on launch night. Here is when it starts, who can preload, how to do it on PS5 and Xbox, and how much space to free up.

Quick answer: Rockstar confirmed that digital pre-orders can start preloading GTA 6 on November 12, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Boxed copies come with a download code, also available from November 12. The game unlocks on November 19. The download size has not been announced yet: free up at least 200 GB to be safe.

Who can preload GTA 6?

• Digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store can preload from November 12.
• Boxed (physical) copies contain a download code, not the game on a disc. Rockstar makes the boxed version available from November 12 so you can redeem the code and preload. If your copy arrives later, the download starts later too.
• No pre-order, no preload: if you buy on launch day, you download the game on launch day.

How to preload GTA 6 on PS5

1. Pre-order the digital version on the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from your boxed copy.
2. Open your Game Library and select Grand Theft Auto VI.
3. Select the countdown under the game and tick automatic download, or choose Download once it appears on November 12.
4. To download overnight, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
5. Leave the console in Rest Mode, not switched off, so the download keeps going.

How to preload GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

1. Pre-order the digital version on the Microsoft Store, or redeem the code from your boxed copy.
2. From November 12, go to My games & apps > See all > Full library > All owned games.
3. Select Grand Theft Auto VI and choose Install all.
4. In Settings > General > Power options, choose Sleep so the download continues while the console is off.

How much space do you need?

Rockstar has not announced the GTA 6 file size. Numbers between 150 and 300 GB are going around, but none of them is official. Rockstar's last open world, Red Dead Redemption 2, needs 150 GB on PC, and GTA 6's map is much bigger.

Our advice: free up at least 200 GB before November 12, and leave extra room for the day-one patch. The original 825 GB PS5 has only about 667 GB of usable space, so check before the preload starts. Short on space? Both consoles support an extra internal NVMe SSD (PS5) or an expansion card (Xbox Series X|S). An external USB drive can store games, but on PS5 it cannot run PS5 games.

What time does GTA 6 unlock?

Rockstar has not announced an unlock time. Digital console games usually unlock at midnight local time on release day, starting in New Zealand and moving west, so most players can expect to start at 12:00 am on November 19 in their own time zone. Can you play early? No. Preloading only downloads the files: the game stays locked until launch.

Can you preload GTA 6 on PC?
