Is GTA 6 on PS4, Xbox One or Switch? Platforms Explained

With GTA 6 launching on November 19, 2026, the most common question from players on older consoles is simple: can I play it on my PS4, Xbox One or Switch? Here is the official answer, what you can play it on, and the cheapest way to get ready for launch.

Quick answer: No. GTA 6 is not coming to PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. Rockstar released it only for PlayStation 5 (every model, including the Digital Edition and PS5 Pro) and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store page even says the game is "not playable on PS4". There is no Switch 2 version announced, and no PC version yet.

Which consoles can play GTA 6?

Platform	GTA 6?	Notes
PS5 (standard and Digital Edition)	✅ Yes	Launches November 19, 2026
PS5 Pro	✅ Yes	Marked "PS5 Pro Enhanced" on the PlayStation Store
Xbox Series X	✅ Yes	Launches November 19, 2026
Xbox Series S	✅ Yes	Same release date, lower power than the Series X
PS4 / PS4 Pro	❌ No	"Not playable on PS4" on the PlayStation Store
Xbox One / One S / One X	❌ No	Not a supported platform
Nintendo Switch	❌ No	Not announced
Nintendo Switch 2	❌ Not announced	Neither Rockstar nor Nintendo has said anything
PC	⏳ Not announced	No PC version or date yet

Rockstar's official pre-order announcement on June 24, 2026 names only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why isn't GTA 6 on PS4 and Xbox One?

Rockstar has not given an official reason, but the hardware gap is easy to see. The PS4 and Xbox One came out in 2013:

• Slow hard drives: GTA 6 streams a huge, dense open world as you move. The PS5 and Xbox Series consoles have fast SSDs; the PS4 and Xbox One use slow mechanical hard drives.
• Weak processors: the old consoles use low-power Jaguar CPUs. Crowds, traffic and physics in Vice City need far more.
• Memory: 8 GB of shared memory on PS4 and Xbox One, against 16 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Even on PS5 and Xbox Series, Rockstar North's co-director said the game runs at 30 FPS. Running it on 2013 hardware was never realistic.

Can you stream GTA 6 to a PS4 or Xbox One?

Not officially:

• PS Remote Play is supported, but it streams from your own PS5 to another screen, such as a PlayStation Portal, a phone or a PC. It does not let a PS4 run the game.
• Cloud gaming: no cloud version of GTA 6 has been announced for Xbox Cloud Gaming or PlayStation Plus. Check official announcements before paying for any streaming service.

What about Nintendo Switch and Switch 2?

The original Switch cannot run GTA 6. For Switch 2, there is no announcement from Rockstar or Nintendo. Rockstar ported GTA 5 to new hardware years after launch, so a Switch 2 version is not impossible later, but nothing is confirmed. Do not buy a Switch 2 to play GTA 6.

What about PC?

GTA 6 has no PC release date. Rockstar's previous games came to PC later: GTA 5 about 19 months after its console launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13 months after. Our guide GTA 6 PC Release Date covers what to expect, and GTA 6 PC System Requirements estimates the PC you will need.

Still on PS4 or Xbox One? Your options

1. Xbox Series S: the cheapest console that runs GTA 6. It has no disc drive, but that does not matter: even the boxed GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc.
2. PS5 Digital Edition: the cheapest way into PlayStation. The boxed code works on it too.
3. Wait for PC: if you already have a gaming PC, waiting for the PC version gives you better performance later, but likely not before 2027 or 2028.

Thinking about storage? GTA 6 needs a lot of space. See GTA 6 File Size and our GTA 6 preload guide before launch.
