GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The 10 Biggest Differences
GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The 10 Biggest Differences

GTA 5 came out in 2013 and is still one of the best-selling games ever. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026, thirteen years later. So what actually changes? Here are the biggest differences between GTA 6 and GTA 5, based only on what Rockstar has confirmed, its developers have said, or its official site shows.

Quick answer: GTA 6 swaps Los Santos for Leonida and Vice City, a map reported to be about twice as big. You play as two characters, Jason and Lucia, instead of three. It adds a six-star wanted level and a new Heat system, localized weather with hurricanes, more than 170 animal species, and it costs $79.99 instead of $59.99.

1. A new state: Leonida instead of San Andreas

GTA 5 took place in San Andreas: the city of Los Santos and the countryside of Blaine County. GTA 6 moves to Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, with six official regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.

Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is about twice the size of GTA 5's map, with more interiors and more to interact with. Rockstar has not published an official size in square miles. Full breakdown in our guide: GTA 6 Map: All 6 Regions of Leonida Explained.

2. Two characters instead of three

GTA 5 let you switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, three very different criminals with their own stories. GTA 6 focuses on a couple: Jason Duval, ex-Army, working for drug runners in the Keys, and Lucia Caminos, just out of the Leonida Penitentiary.

According to Game Informer, you can control them separately or together, and switch between them almost any time. Their relationship can stay platonic or turn romantic, but they cannot split up. The choice has no gameplay bonus, but it changes parts of the story. Rockstar also says big and small choices can change the direction of the story.

Lucia is also the first woman to lead a modern GTA as a main playable character.

3. A tougher police: six stars and the Heat system

GTA 5 had up to five wanted stars. GTA 6 goes up to six. On top of that, a new Heat system means the police can identify you by your appearance and the area you were seen in. To lose them, you can change clothes or hairstyle, ditch the getaway car, or have Jason and Lucia split up. The classic "Busted" screen is still there if either of them is arrested.

Robberies can be done solo or together, loud and fast or quiet and careful, and how far things escalate changes how the police react.

4. Car theft is more realistic

In GTA 5, stealing a parked car usually just meant smashing a window. In GTA 6, some cars need special tools, and expensive cars have better security and trackers. A phone app called WAiNK scans a car to show its security, its registration and what it might be worth to a fence.

5. Weather that changes by area

In GTA 5, the weather was mostly the same across the whole map. In GTA 6, Rockstar rebuilt it to be local and persistent: it can be sunny where you are while a storm hits nearby. Rain leaves puddles that stay, rainbows can appear, and the wind reacts to buildings and the sea. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed, although Rockstar has not said how often they hit or whether they affect the story.

6. Much more wildlife

GTA 5 had deer, cougars, sharks and more. GTA 6 goes much further: Rockstar confirms more than 170 species, including over 60 birds and over 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles. Expect alligators, manatees, flamingos, iguanas, armadillos and monkeys on land, and sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish in the sea. Some animals are Rare, Discoverable or Legendary, and Rockstar is keeping those a secret.

7. More detailed people

NPCs in GTA 6 vary much more in height, build and body type, with freckles, moles, tans, and tattoos and hairstyles that match their community. Rockstar calls the clothing range its largest yet, with outfits that change with the place, the situation, dirt and wear. A dedicated team writes what people say around you.

8. Your phone does more

The phone was already central in GTA 5. In GTA 6:

  • RydeMe, a ride-share app, works as fast travel, and you can chat with other passengers.
  • The in-game map looks like satellite imagery.
  • Snapmatic returns, but Jason and Lucia can only view posts, not post, because they are wanted.
  • Radio stations have new licensed music and ads.

9. More things to do

Game Informer lists activities such as base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboats and jet skis, plus ATV trails, mud parks, demolition derbies, motocross, golf and bass fishing outside the cities.

10. Price, platforms and online

  • Price: GTA 5 cost $59.99 at launch. GTA 6 costs $79.99, or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Details: GTA 6 Price, Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses.

Should you keep playing GTA 5?

Yes, if you play GTA Online: it is still running, and Rockstar has not announced an end date. For story mode, GTA 6 is a full new game with a new world and new characters, so you do not need to finish GTA 5 to understand it.
