How to Beat The Hunt in Phantom Blade Zero (Both Fights)
How to Beat The Hunt in Phantom Blade Zero (Both Fights)

Quick answer: The Hunt is fought twice. The cart fight in the prologue cannot really be lost to a cutscene: survive, block, parry the blue attacks and dodge the red ones until the scene ends. The real fight is at the Great Waterfall in Weeping Creek Valley: stay at mid range, parry the last hit of his combos, wait late to dodge his hook grab, and in phase 2 (Sixfold Scythe) parry the last of his four long scythe swings to pull yourself in and punish him.

Here is our own clip of the fight:

Who is The Hunt?

The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, is a hooded hunter who fights with two hooked chain sickles. His chains reach far across the arena, he punishes panic dodges, and one hook grab can take a big piece of your health. You meet him twice:

Fight Where Phases Can you lose it?
1. Cart fight Prologue, on Old Man Gen's moving cart (quest "To the Death!") 1 It ends in a cutscene, you do not need to empty his health
2. Great Waterfall End of Weeping Creek Valley 2 (Hunter of the Order, then Sixfold Scythe) Yes: this is the real, mandatory boss fight

The colors you must learn

Phantom Blade Zero tells you how to answer each attack with a flash of color. Against The Hunt, this is everything:

  • Blue flash: tap block at the right time to parry.
  • Red flash: the attack cannot be blocked or parried. Dodge it.
  • No flash: block it, or dodge if you are low on Sha-Chi.

On PC with default keys: hold Right Mouse to block, tap Right Mouse to parry, Left Shift to dodge, F for Sha-Chi combos, Q for Power Surge, R to heal and middle mouse to lock on.

Fight 1: the cart fight

The Hunt attacks from horseback while the cart races through a gorge.

  1. Lock on so the camera follows him as he moves between his horse and the cart.
  2. Block his sickle swings from horseback, but do not hold block too long: blocking drains your Sha-Chi.
  3. When he leaps onto the cart, punish him with a Sha-Chi combo.
  4. On his roadside leaps, watch the flash: parry blue, dodge red.
  5. Use Power Surge when you have Sha-Chi Essence and heal when your health is low.

You do not have to win: when the scene triggers, he knocks Soul off the cart and the story moves on.

Fight 2, phase 1: Hunter of the Order

The rematch takes place in the shallow pool under the Great Waterfall.

  • Long chain lash: a straight sweep across the water that reaches very far. Running back in a straight line does not work: step to the side and stay at mid range.
  • Dash-in combo: he rushes in from range for a long string of hits. Guard or parry as he arrives, and parry the blue finisher at the end of his five-hit sickle combo.
  • Chain vault and drop: he plants a sickle and drops on you from above. Parry if you see the blue streak, otherwise dodge.
  • Hook grab (the most dangerous move): he throws a chain, pulls Soul in and finishes with a heavy strike. Do not dodge as soon as he throws: wait until the chain is almost on you.
  • Double side jumps: do not chase him. He follows them with a lunge: get ready for it.
  • Backflip axe throw: watch for the projectile right after the backflip.

Attack after you break his guard or right after a parried finisher. Two or three hits, then step back: he pulls away fast to throw his chain again.

Fight 2, phase 2: Sixfold Scythe

When his first health bar is empty, two more steel arms unfold with extra chain sickles. More blades fly at once, so move sideways a lot.

  • Four long scythe swings after his aerial jump: this is your main opening. Parry the fourth swing: it pulls Soul into melee range. Punish him, then back off.
  • Repeat that loop until his guard breaks, then go all in. Around six loops are enough for most players.
  • Tornado: stay away. It drains both health and Sha-Chi.
  • Slow sickle projectiles: easy to dodge, do not panic.
  • Purple chain attack: leave the purple area, then parry the jump that follows.

Good news: phase 2 has a checkpoint, so dying there does not send you back to phase 1.

Best weapons and setup

  • Dual blades like the Sanguin Twins are great in phase 1: their fast combos hit hard once his guard breaks.
  • Jagged Steel gives more openings in phase 2 and builds bleed while you wait for the parry loop.
  • Dread Axe as a secondary weapon (dropped by Peng Meng) deals strong Sha-Chi damage.
  • Switch weapons when your Sha-Chi is low: it refills it.
  • Rest at a Bell before the fight to restore your Phantom Edge uses.
  • Heal after his long attacks end, never while he is winding up. Keep a heal for after a hook grab.
  • Still stuck? Lower the difficulty to Wayfarer: his attacks deal much less damage and the fight is otherwise the same.

Reward

Beating both phases at the Great Waterfall gives you the Hunter's Chain Sickle and 20,000 Remnant Dust. The chain sickles are a strong weapon with a three-hit chain attack, and the chains also work as grappling hooks to move around the map.

Game stuttering in boss fights?

Frame drops make parry timing much harder. If the game stutters on an NVIDIA card, read which NVIDIA driver to use for Phantom Blade Zero, and check our best PC settings for a steady frame rate.
