What the remaster changes
The story, the five episodes and your choices are the same as in 2013. What changes is everything around them:
- New visuals: redrawn textures, new character models and harsher, more noir lighting.
- Noir Mode: an optional black-and-white filter for the whole game.
- Lost Scenes: playable deleted scenes that were cut from the original.
- Behind the scenes: making-of videos about the original game and the remaster.
What critics loved
The story still holds up
This is the point every review makes. GamingTrend calls it "still the best in class when it comes to narrative adventures". You play as Bigby Wolf, the Big Bad Wolf turned sheriff of Fabletown, a hidden community of fairy-tale characters in 1980s New York, investigating a series of murders. The writing, the voice acting and the tension of the choices are what critics praise most.
The best way to play it today
CGMagazine calls it "the definitive way to experience this episodic adventure cult classic", and Game Rant says it is now the best way to play. The new art keeps the comic-book look of the original while looking much sharper on a modern screen.
The extras
The playable Lost Scenes and the making-of videos are a welcome bonus for fans who want to know more about how the game was made.
What critics did not like
Little new for returning players
The most common reservation. CGMagazine says current owners "will have little incentive" to buy again, TheGamer notes there is no new story, and Final Weapon finds the new additions a bit thin. If you finished the original, you are paying mainly for better visuals and a few extras.
The old animations and quick-time events
IGN is disappointed that some of the original's stiff animations were not fixed, and Noisy Pixel says the aging animations and heavy use of quick-time events keep it from feeling truly modern. GamingTrend still finds it "janky" in places.
Noir Mode
It sounds great, but GamingTrend found it felt tacked on and made some interface elements, like dialogue timers, harder to read. It is optional, so it is easy to ignore.
A few bugs
Some reviewers saw small bugs, like a resolution change problem on PC and occasional stutters (CGMagazine).
How does it run on PC?
Very well. It is a light game: the recommended specs are only a GTX 1050 Ti or RX 6400, a Core i3-8100 or Ryzen 3 2300X and 8 GB of RAM, for High settings at 1080p and 60 FPS. GamingTrend reports it easily reached a 170 FPS monitor's refresh rate at 1440p on desktop, and about 190 FPS on a gaming laptop.
