Search for "PPSSPP PS5" and you will find hundreds of videos and download pages promising PS5 games on PPSSPP: Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, GTA 6, all "working on Android". None of them is real. Here is what PPSSPP actually is, why it cannot run PS5 games, what those "PS5 PPSSPP" files really are, and the safe way to play great PSP games on your phone or PC.
Quick answer: PPSSPP cannot run PS5 games. It is an emulator for the PSP, Sony's 2004 handheld, and it only plays PSP games. Any "PS5 game for PPSSPP" is either a PSP game with a fake name, a mod, or a scam download that can contain malware. No phone today can emulate a PS5, and even on PC, real PS5 emulation is still at a very early stage.
What is PPSSPP?
PPSSPP is a free, open-source PSP emulator made by Henrik Rydgård. It lets you play PlayStation Portable games on Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux, often in higher resolution than the original handheld. It is legitimate software, available from the official PPSSPP website and the official app stores.
The name says it all: PSP is in the middle. PPSSPP has nothing to do with the PS5.
Can PPSSPP run PS5 games?
No, and it never will. Three reasons:
- Different machine. An emulator recreates one specific console. PPSSPP recreates the PSP. A PS5 game is written for completely different hardware, so PPSSPP cannot even read it.
- The power gap is enormous. The PSP has a 333 MHz processor and 32 MB of memory (64 MB on later models). The PS5 has an 8-core Zen 2 processor at up to 3.5 GHz, 16 GB of memory and a fast SSD. No phone comes close to emulating that.
- PS5 games are huge. Many PS5 games are 50 to 150 GB. A "PS5 game for PPSSPP" that weighs 1 GB is not a PS5 game.
What are the "PS5 games for PPSSPP" you see online?
They fall into three groups:
| What you download | What it really is | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| "God of War Ragnarök PPSSPP", "Spider-Man 2 PSP" | A real PSP game (like God of War: Ghost of Sparta) with a new name and a fake cover | Low, but you are not getting a PS5 game |
| "GTA 6 PPSSPP", "FIFA 27 PPSSPP" | A mod of an old PSP game, such as GTA Vice City Stories or an old FIFA, with new textures or names | Medium: often packed with ads and fake "unlock" steps |
| "PS5 emulator APK", "PS5 games PPSSPP download" | A scam: fake apps, surveys, paid "activation codes" or malware | High: never install these |
The usual trick: a video shows "PS5 gameplay on Android", then asks you to complete a survey or install another app to "unlock" the download. That is how these pages make money, and nothing real is at the end.
Is there a real PS5 emulator at all?
On PC, yes, but only as early experiments. Projects like SharpEmu and KytyPS5 can boot a few small PS5 games and menus on powerful PCs, while big games such as Ghost of Yōtei only reach a splash screen and crash. Our guide PS5 Emulator for PC (2026): What Works and Which Are Fake covers the real projects, what runs today and how to spot fake ones.
On Android and iPhone: no. There is no working PS5 emulator for phones, and any app claiming otherwise is fake.
How to play PSP games safely with PPSSPP
- Download PPSSPP only from official sources: ppsspp.org, the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Avoid "PPSSPP Gold" files from random sites.
- Use games you own. PPSSPP does not include games. The legal way is to dump the UMD discs or digital PSP games you own with a PSP.
- Raise the resolution. In Settings > Graphics, set the rendering resolution to 2x or 3x for a much sharper picture on modern screens.
- Use a controller. Most Bluetooth controllers, including PS4 and PS5 controllers, work with PPSSPP on Android, iPhone and PC.
The best PSP games that feel close to bigger consoles: God of War: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, GTA: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Tekken: Dark Resurrection.
Can you run PPSSPP on a PS5?
Not officially. Sony does not allow emulators on the PS5. You may have heard that the PlayStation Portal was hacked in 2024 to run PSP games through PPSSPP: it was a security researchers' demo, not something Sony supports, and it is not a way to play PS5 games either.
Want to play PS5 games on PC?
The real options today are the official PC versions of PlayStation games (God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, The Last of Us), PS Remote Play from your own PS5, and cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium. Check if your PC can handle them with Check My PC or our guide Can My PC Run It?.
