How to connect an Xbox controller to your PC
With a cable: plug it in with USB-C (Xbox Series) or micro-USB (Xbox One). Windows installs it on its own.
With Bluetooth (Xbox Series and most Xbox One controllers): turn it on, then hold the small pair button on top until the Xbox button flashes quickly.
On Windows, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth and pick Xbox Wireless Controller.
With an Xbox Wireless Adapter, press the button on the adapter, then the pair button on the controller.
Press any button on this page. In Chrome on Windows, every Xbox controller is listed as "Xbox 360 Controller (XInput)": that is normal.
What to check on an Xbox controller
LT and RT: press them slowly. The bar should rise smoothly to 100%.
LB and RB: bumpers wear out on heavily used pads. Press them at the edges and in the middle; each press should light up once.
Stick drift: run the drift test. Xbox pads often show a little drift after a few years.
Firmware and remapping: the free Xbox Accessories app on Windows updates the controller and lets you check the Elite profiles.
Trigger rumble (impulse triggers), the Elite paddles and the Share button may not be visible to browsers. Paddles show up as the button they are mapped to.
Why does my Xbox Series controller show as "Xbox 360 Controller"?
On Windows, Chrome and Edge read every Xbox pad through the same driver (XInput), which reports the name "Xbox 360 Controller". The buttons and sticks are the same, so the test is still accurate.
Why is my Xbox controller not detected?
Press a button first. If nothing appears, try another USB cable or port, make sure only one app is using the controller, update it with the Xbox Accessories app, and restart your browser.
How do I test the Xbox Elite paddles?
Map each paddle to a button in the Xbox Accessories app, then press the paddle here: the button it is mapped to lights up.
How do I fix Xbox controller stick drift?
Clean around the stick with a little isopropyl alcohol, update the firmware in the Xbox Accessories app, and raise the deadzone in your games. If the drift stays, the thumbstick module is worn and needs to be replaced or repaired under warranty.
